Election Suspended in Sherpur-3 After Death of Jamaat Candidate

The election in Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency has been suspended following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated candidate Alhaj Nuruzzaman Badal (51).

The decision was confirmed on Wednesday morning (4 February) by the Returning Officer and District Commissioner Tarfadar Mahmudur Rahman.

He said that under Article 17(1) of the election law, if a validly nominated candidate dies after the withdrawal deadline and before polling day, the election in that constituency must be cancelled immediately.

Accordingly, a public notice is being prepared to suspend the election process. Once issued, the suspension will be officially announced, and a new election schedule will be announced later.

Nuruzzaman Badal passed away at around 1:30am on Wednesday while receiving treatment at Swadesh Hospital in Mymensingh, said Sherpur district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Md Hafizur Rahman.

He added that Badal had been suffering from kidney-related complications for a long time.
