PM directs swift action after Santahar train derailment

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the local administration to take immediate measures to minimise damage and reduce public suffering following a train accident in Santahar, Bogura, involving homebound Eid travellers.

The prime minister spoke with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bogura this evening and inquired about the overall situation in the accident-hit area.

During the conversation, he instructed the authorities to ensure quick rescue operations and take steps so that stranded passengers can reach their destinations without delay.

Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman confirmed the development, saying the premier contacted the local officials immediately after learning about the incident.

He said Tarique Rahman also directed officials to ensure prompt medical treatment for the injured, restore transport communication, and take all necessary steps to ease the suffering of passengers.

According to initial reports, the accident occurred around 2:30pm when nine coaches of the Dhaka-bound Nilphamari-bound Nil Sagar Express derailed in the Alamdighi area of Bogura district, leaving more than a hundred passengers injured.

The prime minister is closely monitoring the situation, particularly as Bogura was his former electoral constituency. He was elected from Bogura-6 in the 13th parliamentary elections held on February 12, but later vacated the seat after assuming office as prime minister.
