The Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) on Friday seized a large consignment of banned current nets and thread reels worth approximately Tk 139.29 crore during a special operation in Munshiganj.

BCG Media Officer Sabbir Alam Sujan confirmed the development.

He said that acting on a tip-off, a team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted a raid around 7:00am in the Durgabari and Sipahi Para areas under Panchasar in Munshiganj Sadar upazila.

During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched three net-making factories and two warehouses. They recovered 3 crore 97 lakh 45 thousand metres of illegal current nets and 30,000 thread reels used to produce the prohibited nets.

The estimated market value of the seized items is Tk 139.29 crore.

The confiscated materials were later destroyed to prevent their use in illegal fishing activities.

Sabbir Alam Sujan said the Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to protect the country’s fisheries resources from the harmful impact of illegal nets.
