Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Arrested in Dhaka

Former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been arrested from the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police carried out the arrest from her residence on Monday night.

Additional Commissioner (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter, saying she is currently in DB custody in connection with a case. However, details about the case were not immediately disclosed.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury served as the first female Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad from April 2013 to September 2024.

She was also elected as a Member of Parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
