Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Chandpur on May 16 and Feni on May 25 ahead of the monsoon season, Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee said.
The minister shared the information while speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Prime Minister at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The meeting on water resources management was held at the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Division office.
Anee said the government has nearly completed the technical work, survey and feasibility study for the Padma Barrage Project, and a decision on the project would be taken soon.
He also said the Prime Minister will inaugurate canal excavation programmes during his visits to Chandpur and Feni.
“The Prime Minister is giving priority to canal excavation programmes wherever he visits across the country,” the minister said.
According to the minister, the government has undertaken a plan to excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals across the country over the next five years.
He said ministers and lawmakers are continuing the canal excavation programme in their respective areas in line with the government’s initiative.
Anee added that the ongoing excavation work would continue until the end of May before being paused during the monsoon season.
The programme is expected to resume again after the monsoon, likely from November through January, he said.
