Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government is giving the highest priority to the implementation of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) to prevent measles outbreaks across the country.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while replying to a starred question from ruling party lawmaker Md Mustafizur Rahman Babul in the Jatiya Sangsad.
He said the causes and spread of measles, along with the impact of various policy and operational factors on vaccination activities, are being regularly reviewed and evaluated.
According to the Prime Minister, vaccine procurement, storage and distribution under the EPI programme are being carried out in line with international standards and existing government rules and regulations.
Regarding recent measles outbreaks, Tarique Rahman said the issue would be examined through necessary data analysis and technical assessments to determine whether any changes in the vaccine procurement system had negatively affected immunization activities.
“If the review finds evidence of negligence or dereliction of duty by any individual or institution, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with existing laws and regulations,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the government has already taken several initiatives to strengthen the national immunization programme and prevent similar situations in the future.
These measures include ensuring uninterrupted vaccine supply, improving vaccine stock management, expanding disease surveillance activities, strengthening rapid outbreak detection and response mechanisms, increasing public awareness and enhancing coordination with national and international partners.
He also said special vaccination campaigns are currently underway to increase measles immunization coverage and bring vulnerable populations under protection.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening public health services and ensuring wider access to life-saving vaccines across the country.
