Govt Plans Nationwide Modern Railway Network

The government has taken an initiative to develop a seamless and time-efficient railway communication system across Bangladesh as part of its medium and long-term transport strategy.

The decision was taken at a meeting on railway management and future planning chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Public Administration Conference Room of the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

According to Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfiquar Hasan (Hasan Shiplu), the meeting discussed in detail the future development plans of the railway sector.

Among the major initiatives discussed were the gradual conversion of metre-gauge railway lines from Panchagarh to Cox’s Bazar into broad-gauge lines and the modernization of the railway signalling system.

Officials said the planned upgrades are aimed at improving railway efficiency, reducing travel time and creating a more integrated rail network across the country.

The meeting also reviewed possible financing options for implementing the proposed projects and future railway expansion plans.

Road Transport, Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Habibur Rashid, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Railways Secretary Md Fahimul Islam and Bangladesh Railway Director General Md Afzal Hossain attended the meeting.

Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to modernising the railway sector and strengthening nationwide connectivity through an efficient and integrated rail transport system.
