Prime Minister Tarique Rahman delivered his first address to the nation, presenting a broad roadmap for his government and pledging to restore democracy, uphold the rule of law, ensure equal rights, curb corruption and build a self-reliant and humane Bangladesh.

“Not party or political influence or force, but the rule of law will be the final word in governing the state,” he said in the televised speech.

State-run Bangladesh Television (BTV) broadcast the address at 9:45pm.

The prime minister said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government believes the state belongs to all citizens, regardless of political views, religion, or ideology.

“Whether you voted for BNP, did not vote for BNP, or did not vote at all—everyone has equal rights over this government,” he said.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a self-reliant, secure, humane, and democratic Bangladesh.

“We want to turn this country into a safe land for every citizen. Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians—regardless of party, opinion, religion, or ethnicity—this country belongs to all of us,” he added.

Tarique Rahman said all constitutional, governmental, and non-governmental institutions would operate strictly according to established laws and regulations.

Describing the challenges facing the country, he said the new government began its journey amid a fragile economy, weakened governance, and a deteriorating law and order situation.

Improving law and order and controlling corruption are the government’s top priorities, he said.

The premier also identified the spread of gambling and drugs as major contributors to crime and social instability, noting that law enforcement agencies have been directed to take strict action.

Extending greetings on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, the prime minister urged businesses to act responsibly.

“Ramadan is a month of self-purification. This month should not increase people’s suffering,” he said, calling on traders to keep prices within the reach of ordinary citizens.

He pledged to dismantle “syndicates of wrongdoing” and ensure fairness for both consumers and businesses.

Highlighting the country’s potential, Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of developing a skilled workforce.

“If we can transform our large population into a skilled workforce, this population will become our human resource,” he said.

He assured students and young people of full government support for intellectual, scientific, and technological development, particularly in the era of artificial intelligence.

Responding to public concerns, the prime minister said authorities had been instructed to ensure uninterrupted gas, water, and electricity supplies during iftar, tarawih, and sehri.

He also called for austerity and responsible use of resources.

“In the very first meeting of the BNP parliamentary party, we decided that treasury bench members will not import tax-free cars or take plot allocations using government privileges,” he said, describing the move as an example of fairness and accountability.

Addressing severe traffic congestion, especially in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman announced plans for a comprehensive restructuring of the railway network to reduce pressure on the capital.

“We believe that making railway communication accessible, affordable, and safe will reduce dependence on city-centered living and improve the environment,” he said.

Recalling his return to the country after nearly 18 years, the prime minister said voters had entrusted BNP with the responsibility of governing and implementing its plans.

“Implementation has already begun. We seek your continued support in the days ahead,” he said.
