The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that Bangladesh will directly qualify for the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, putting an end to speculation about the team’s participation.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the ICC said Bangladesh’s place in the 2028 tournament, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, is assured based on the ICC T20I team rankings.
The qualification scenario became clear after Pakistan’s victory over Namibia in Colombo, which finalized the Super Eight lineup of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The eight teams that reached the Super Eight — Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England, South Africa and New Zealand — have all earned automatic qualification for the 2028 edition.
Under ICC rules, the 2028 tournament will feature 20 teams, with 12 teams qualifying automatically. These include the co-hosts and top-performing teams from the current World Cup.
Although Australia did not progress to the Super Eight this year, their place is guaranteed as a host nation.
With nine automatic spots filled (the Super Eight teams plus Australia), the remaining three places were to be decided by ICC T20I rankings as of March 9, one day after the World Cup final.
Bangladesh, currently ranked ninth, secured one of those spots. Afghanistan (10th) and Ireland (12th) also confirmed qualification, as there are no remaining T20I fixtures before the ranking cut-off that could change their positions.
The remaining eight teams for the 2028 T20 World Cup will qualify through regional tournaments.
