PM urges merit-based promotions in Navy, Air Force

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the Navy and Air Force Selection Board to prioritise merit, competence, leadership, discipline, integrity, loyalty and professional suitability when considering officers for promotion, without political influence or personal preference.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Navy and Air Force Selection Board-2026 at Air Force Headquarters, the Prime Minister said the armed forces play a vital role in protecting Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty while also supporting civil administration during disasters and maintaining peace and stability.

The board is considering eligible Bangladesh Navy officers holding the ranks of Captain, Commander and Lieutenant Commander, and Bangladesh Air Force officers holding the ranks of Group Captain, Wing Commander and Squadron Leader for promotion.

During the visit, Tarique Rahman also conferred the Admiral rank badge on newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Khondkar Misbah ul Azim.

He later inspected several Bangladesh Air Force installations, including the Air Defence Operations Centre (ADOC) and Air Command Operations Centre (ACOC). He observed air-defence activities and live UAV operations.

At the Aerospace Research and Development Complex (ARDC), the Prime Minister viewed locally developed UAVs, including drones, interceptor drones, kamikaze drones and VTOL systems.

Tarique Rahman expressed hope that the development of advanced aerial systems through domestic technological capabilities would strengthen Bangladesh’s research, innovation and technological self-reliance.
