Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has called for an effective roadmap, supported by technical assistance from UNESCO, to address the growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation.

He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting at the secretariat with UNESCO’s Country Representative to Bangladesh, Susan Vize.

During the meeting, Dr. Vize outlined UNESCO’s ongoing activities in Bangladesh, emphasizing efforts to strengthen media development and policy frameworks. She also highlighted global initiatives aimed at tackling misinformation and disinformation, which have become major global concerns.

She noted that UNESCO is placing particular focus on fact-checking as a key tool to counter false information. As part of this initiative, students from various universities in Bangladesh are being trained in information verification techniques.

Welcoming the efforts, the minister said there is strong potential to expand cooperation between the government and UNESCO in the media sector. He stressed the importance of using UNESCO’s expertise to ensure greater transparency and credibility of information in the digital era.

The UNESCO representative assured full support in this regard.

State Minister Yeaser Khan Choudhury and Information Secretary Mahbuba Farjana were also present at the meeting.
