President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said all those involved in enforced disappearances must be brought to justice, regardless of how powerful they are, while stressing that there should be no place for secret detention centres such as “Aynaghar” in Bangladesh.
Addressing an event marking the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances-2026, the President said enforced disappearance is a grave violation of human rights that destroys not only the lives of victims but also the peace, security and future of their families.
He said justice must replace revenge, with those genuinely responsible for enforced disappearances and related crimes being held accountable under the law.
The President urged the government to ensure dignity, social security, healthcare, education, livelihood and rehabilitation for victims and their families, saying the state’s responsibility does not end with punishing the perpetrators.
He called for a Bangladesh where political differences do not lead to political vengeance, freedom of expression exists without fear, and state power remains under the Constitution and the rule of law.
The President also said a country’s true progress should be measured not only by economic growth but also by its commitment to democracy, justice, humanity and the safety of its citizens.
