Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has called on President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban and conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During the meeting, the Chinese ambassador invited the President to pay a state visit to China at a convenient time.
Yao Wen briefed the President on the outcomes of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China, highlighting progress on the China Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ), the modernisation of Mongla Port and possible Chinese cooperation in establishing the Mongla Export Processing Zone.
The ambassador expressed hope that at least 30 Chinese companies would invest around $500 million in Bangladesh, potentially creating employment opportunities for around one lakh people.
The two sides also discussed cooperation on the Teesta River Integrated Management and Restoration Project, a foreign minister-level strategic dialogue, proposed “2+2” diplomacy and defence dialogue, renewable energy, electric vehicle assembly and exports of Bangladeshi fruits to China.
Cooperation on the China-Bangladesh-Myanmar Economic Corridor and joint efforts to address the Rohingya crisis also featured in the discussions.
Both sides expressed their determination to further strengthen Bangladesh-China relations through broader economic, strategic and development cooperation.
