United Healthcare has successfully performed what it described as Bangladesh’s first-ever robotic surgeries, marking a major milestone in the country’s healthcare sector.
The private health facility said two robotic procedures were conducted at its hospital in United City on Madani Avenue using AI-powered robotic surgical technology.
Prof Dr Rafiques Salehin performed a robotic cholecystectomy on a 34-year-old patient suffering from gallstones, while Prof Dr Samsad Jahan (Shelly) conducted a robotic hysterectomy on a 45-year-old woman with excessive uterine bleeding.
The surgeries were carried out by a multidisciplinary team using the Medbot Toumai Endoscopic Surgical Robot. The technology provides surgeons with a three-dimensional view and highly flexible robotic arms, allowing greater precision during complex procedures.
According to the hospital, robotic surgery can help reduce incision size, blood loss, damage to surrounding tissues and postoperative pain while supporting faster recovery.
Prof Dr Salehin said the technology enables surgeons to perform precise procedures in complex and narrow areas while helping protect vital organs and blood vessels.
Prof Dr Shelly said the hospital plans to gradually expand robotic surgery services to cardiac, neurosurgical, urological, general, gynaecological and thoracic procedures.
She said the long-term goal is to provide advanced treatment within Bangladesh, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad and helping save foreign currency.
