Special Metropolitan Magistrates of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) disposed of 3,778 criminal cases and 1,742 traffic cases through summary trials in March.
According to officials, a total of 6,863 individuals were arrested during the period, of whom 3,701 were sentenced to different terms of punishment through summary court proceedings.
Law Officer Mohammad Ataul Haque said the Motijheel Division arrested 920 individuals in 552 cases, fined Tk 171,000 and sentenced 633 people. Tejgaon Division arrested 1,035 individuals in 550 cases, fined Tk 161,900 and sentenced 389.
Wari Division arrested 662 individuals in 361 cases, imposing fines of Tk 387,200 and sentencing 251. Gulshan Division arrested 468 individuals in 321 cases, fined Tk 88,800 and sentenced 120.
In Mirpur Division, 2,025 individuals were arrested in 1,017 cases, with fines totaling Tk 459,900 and 921 people sentenced. Ramna Division arrested 690 individuals in 297 cases, fined Tk 17,000 and sentenced 583.
Lalbagh Division arrested 485 individuals in 323 cases, imposing fines of Tk 14,700 and sentencing 437, while Uttara Division arrested 578 individuals in 357 cases, fined Tk 253,100 and sentenced 367.
On the traffic side, DMP divisions filed 914 cases in March. Along with 214 pending cases, a total of 1,742 cases were disposed of, with fines amounting to Tk 318,700.
Officials said summary trials under the Code of Criminal Procedure are used for minor offences that require lighter punishment.
