by deskreport

Dhaka: The government has continued its disaster response operations in areas affected by recent flash floods, landslides and hill collapses, while regional, district and upazila information offices have intensified public awareness campaigns to help communities stay safe during and after the disasters.

According to a handout issued by the Press Information Department (PID), the Regional Information Offices and district-level information offices are conducting extensive awareness activities on disaster preparedness, health protection and post-flood safety across the affected regions.

Chattogram Still Worst Affected

The latest report from the Chattogram Regional Information Office and the District Information Office said floodwaters have inundated Chattogram city and 15 upazilas of the district.

Authorities are continuing emergency dissemination of flood-related information through public announcements and road campaigns.

The awareness campaign urges residents to avoid staying in flood-damaged or structurally unsafe houses, maintain proper health precautions, prevent snakebites, ensure the safety of children, women, older persons and people with disabilities, avoid financial transactions while receiving relief assistance, stay away from electric poles and fallen power lines, and eliminate stagnant water to reduce the risk of dengue.

Situation Improving in Hill Districts

In Khagrachari, no rainfall has been recorded recently and no new incidents of landslides or hill collapses have occurred. Floodwaters have receded from most areas, although normal life has yet to fully return.

The District Information Office has continued broadcasting public awareness messages on landslides, floods and post-flood recovery measures.

The overall flood situation has also improved in Cox’s Bazar, although some families remain stranded in Pekua upazila. The district recorded 43 millimetres of rainfall over the past 24 hours, with no new reports of landslides or hill collapses.

Public awareness campaigns covering landslide risks, flood safety, dengue and chikungunya prevention and post-flood health measures remain ongoing.

In Rangamati, authorities reported that the overall situation is normal. Information officials have continued road campaigns encouraging residents in landslide-prone areas to move to safer locations when necessary.

The situation in Bandarban has also returned to normal. The district recorded 30 millimetres of rainfall during the past 24 hours, while the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers are flowing below the danger level.

Floodwaters have largely receded, allowing many displaced families to return home. Public awareness campaigns and educational film screenings on disaster preparedness and post-flood safety continue across the district.

Rivers Rising in Sylhet Region

According to the latest reports from the Sylhet Regional Information Office and district information offices, Sylhet recorded 57 millimetres of rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 6:00 am.

The increased rainfall has caused water levels in the Surma, Kushiyara, Sari-Gowain and Piyain rivers to rise.

While the Surma River remains below the danger level, the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at Fenchuganj. Authorities said there is currently no risk of widespread new flooding, although short-term inundation continues in some low-lying riverside areas.

In Sunamganj, the overall flood situation remains stable despite rising river levels. The Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Markuli point.

In Habiganj, floodwaters have receded from previously inundated areas in Habiganj Sadar, Bahubal and Baniachang upazilas following reduced rainfall. The district recorded 5.5 millimetres of rainfall over the past 24 hours, with no reported landslides.

Authorities have continued public awareness campaigns across the district.

The flood situation in Moulvibazar also remains stable. The Manu River is flowing below the danger level, although erosion has been reported along the river protection embankment in Kamalganj upazila.

The District Information Office has continued awareness activities during both the flood response and post-flood recovery periods.

According to the PID, the government will continue monitoring the evolving disaster situation while maintaining public awareness programmes and coordinating relief and recovery efforts in the affected districts.
