Govt Adopts Short-, Medium- and Long-Term Plans to Tackle Energy Crisis

by deskreport

Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin has said the government has adopted short-, medium- and long-term plans to address Bangladesh’s gas and electricity crises and strengthen energy security.

He said Bangladesh has become dependent on two floating LNG terminals, or FSRUs, one of which has remained out of operation for a long time due to technical problems.

Amin said the government is repairing the non-operational FSRU and plans to add a third one, possibly before 2028. The number could eventually be increased to five in the medium and long term.

He made the remarks while briefing reporters after a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and leaders of 21 leading business associations and apex bodies at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

Under the medium-term plan, around 150 new gas wells are being drilled across the country. After completion, another 150 wells will be drilled in the second phase.

The government is also exploring land-based LNG terminals and plans to strengthen the national gas pipeline network to reduce long-term dependence on FSRUs.

Amin said the government has outlined a plan to maintain a sustainable balance among oil-, gas- and coal-based power generation while giving the highest priority to solar and other renewable energy sources.

He said business leaders and media representatives shared their experiences and practical views on the power and energy sector during the meeting.

The Prime Minister assured entrepreneurs and industrialists of full policy support, while expecting the private sector to ensure effective implementation of those policies.

Amin said the government and private sector would work together to take the country forward on the path to prosperity.

He said the government inherited numerous crises after 16 years of what he described as “fascist misrule, corruption and malfeasance” and acknowledged that all the problems could not be solved overnight.

However, he said the government has strong goodwill, sincerity and accountability, with a clear plan reflected in the power and energy strategy.

The PMO spokesperson said business leaders openly highlighted their ongoing challenges and crises. The government has decided to continue such exchanges regularly to strengthen cooperation and maintain dialogue with the business community.

“We believe that through our collective efforts, we can build Bangladesh into a truly self-reliant, economically prosperous and sovereign state,” he said.

Senior government officials, business leaders and media representatives attended the meeting and subsequent press briefing.
