The government is working to develop livable and sustainable cities across the country through planned urbanisation, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher has said.
“An initiative has been taken to construct 100,000 flats for people with limited incomes. Our goal is to ensure planned urbanisation across the country. To this end, steps have been taken to formulate and implement master plans in various city corporations, districts and important urban areas across the country,” he said.
The minister made the remarks before joining a colourful rally organised to mark World Habitat Day 2026. The rally began from Zia Udyan and ended at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre (BICC).
State Minister for Public Works Ahmed Sohel Manzur, ministry Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md Riazul Islam, Chief Engineer Md Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury, officials of various departments and agencies under the ministry and representatives of related organisations were present at the rally.
Zakaria Taher said urbanisation must take place under comprehensive master plans to prevent unplanned growth.
“Under the master plans, we need to develop housing, roads, communication systems and essential civic infrastructure. Ensuring planned urbanisation and housing facilities across the country is one of the government’s key priorities,” he said.
The minister also called upon all concerned to participate in the seminar and fair organised on the occasion of World Habitat Day.
