The High Court has disposed of 62,637 old cases in just 12 working days under a special initiative to reduce the longstanding case backlog and ensure speedy justice.
Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal said the initiative, taken under the direction of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, would help reduce the prolonged wait of litigants and strengthen public confidence in the judiciary.
“Case backlog has long been one of the major challenges facing Bangladesh’s judicial system. Therefore, the initiative to expedite the disposal of old cases will not only bring an end to the prolonged wait of litigants but also further strengthen public confidence and trust in the judiciary,” he said.
Kazal described the disposal of 62,637 old cases within 12 working days as a significant achievement, particularly highlighting the disposal of 5,405 old criminal miscellaneous cases in a single day.
He appreciated the Chief Justice, judges of the High Court Division and the Supreme Court administration for taking the initiative and expressed hope that more timely measures would be introduced to accelerate case disposal.
The Attorney General’s Office, he said, would continue to cooperate with the judiciary to facilitate the speedy disposal of cases.
Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam said 13 criminal motion benches of the High Court Division disposed of 5,405 old criminal miscellaneous cases on August 13.
With this, a total of 55,730 old criminal miscellaneous cases have been disposed of within 12 working days. Overall, 62,637 old cases, including criminal miscellaneous and writ cases, have been disposed of since the special initiative began.
The initiative was launched on May 7, with judges of the Criminal Motion and Writ Motion Benches instructed to prioritise long-pending cases and dispose of old criminal miscellaneous and writ cases on designated days each week.
Shafiqul Islam said the special initiative to dispose of old cases would continue.
