Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed the concerned authorities to take immediate steps to support farmers affected by heavy rainfall in the haor region.
He instructed officials to prepare a transparent and accurate list of the affected farmers.
The directives were given during a meeting held this afternoon at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Press Wing.
The meeting reviewed the government’s activities regarding financial assistance for farmers in the haor areas.
According to the release, the Prime Minister said, “An accurate and transparent list must be prepared by identifying the actual affected farmers. Based on this list, financial assistance will be provided to the farmers for the next three months.”
The meeting decided that financial assistance would be provided to the affected farmers as quickly as possible.
Discussions were also held on slightly advancing paddy planting and harvesting schedules to reduce losses caused by rainfall.
Earlier, on April 29, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told the Jatiya Sangsad that the government would try to support farmers in the haor areas for three months after identifying those affected by heavy rainfall.
Among those present at the meeting were Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid, and lawmakers from the haor region.
Others attending included Jatiya Sangsad Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam, and lawmakers Dr Osman Faruque, Fazlur Rahman, Lutfozzaman Babar, Kamruzzaman Kamrul, Nurul Islam, Kalim Uddin Ahmed Milon and Mohammad Koysor Ahmed.
