The investigation into the murder of four members of a family in Rangpur has been transferred from Kotwali Police Station to the Detective Branch (DB) for a more intensive probe and speedy submission of the charge sheet.
RpMP Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said Inspector Md Zinnat Ali, Officer-in-Charge of the Metropolitan DB, has been appointed as the new Investigation Officer of the case.
The previous Investigation Officer, Inspector Milan Chatterjee, handed over the case documents to Zinnat Ali. The two officers later visited the crime scene at the house of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel in Machhuapara and discussed the findings of the investigation so far.
Earlier, accused Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, gave confessional statements before a Chief Metropolitan Magistrate under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The court subsequently sent both accused to jail.
The victims were retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25, and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12.
Police recovered their decomposed bodies from the family home on Saturday night. Following autopsies at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, the bodies were handed over to relatives and later cremated at the Dakhiganj crematorium.
According to the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, the family was allegedly killed after Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel tried to prevent the accused from consuming Yaba tablets on the roof of the house.
