New York: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted the Bangladesh-sponsored “Culture of Peace” resolution, reaffirming the international community’s commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

The resolution, titled “Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace,” was adopted by the General Assembly on Friday, renewing global support for promoting peace through dialogue, mutual understanding and multilateral cooperation.

Introducing the resolution, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said building peaceful, inclusive and resilient societies requires sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for diversity and unwavering adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.

He thanked UN member states for their constructive engagement and broad support for the resolution, calling for renewed collective efforts to promote dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict and understanding over intolerance.

“Peace can only be sustained through inclusive dialogue, mutual respect and strengthened multilateral cooperation,” he said while presenting the resolution.

Originally adopted in 1999 at Bangladesh’s initiative, the Culture of Peace resolution has since become the United Nations’ principal framework for advancing a global culture of peace.

The resolution promotes the values of respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity and non-violence, while reinforcing international efforts to prevent conflicts, foster peaceful coexistence and strengthen multilateral cooperation.

The latest adoption reaffirms the international community’s continued commitment to advancing the ideals of the Culture of Peace agenda and promoting dialogue as a key instrument for resolving global challenges.
