Bangladesh Railway has launched a project to convert the 59.93-kilometre Chattogram-Dohazari railway line into dual gauge, aiming to improve rail connectivity between Chattogram Port and the country’s northern, western and central regions.
The upgrade will allow both metre-gauge and broad-gauge trains to operate on the same track, increasing railway capacity while reducing travel time and transportation costs. The improved connection is also expected to speed up the movement of goods from Chattogram Port, reduce pressure on roads and create new opportunities for industry, agriculture, trade and tourism in southern Chattogram.
Under the project, existing bridges, culverts, drainage systems, stations, platforms, loop lines, level crossings, signalling and telecommunications systems will be upgraded, alongside improvements to railway safety infrastructure.
Local residents have raised concerns about land acquisition, waterlogging, noise pollution and disruption to communities. Project officials said affected people and institutions would receive compensation under existing laws for damage to land, property, businesses, plants and crops.
A Grievance Redressal Management Committee will also be formed with representatives from Bangladesh Railway, the upazila administration, public representatives, the Department of Environment and local NGOs to address complaints.
Environmental safeguards will include regular water spraying to control dust, noise-management measures, proper waste disposal and worker safety measures. Officials said noise levels near schools, hospitals and religious institutions would be controlled and unnecessary use of high-noise equipment avoided.
Where trees need to be removed, at least three trees will be planted for every tree cut, while environmental experts have called for close monitoring to prevent deforestation and protect biodiversity.
Project Director Md Asadul Haque said concerns and recommendations from local communities would be incorporated into the final Environmental Impact Assessment report.
Once completed, the dual-gauge conversion is expected to strengthen the national railway network, improve passenger and freight movement, reduce road congestion and give fresh momentum to economic activity in southern Chattogram.
