by deskreport

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to take a series of measures to ease traffic congestion in Dhaka, including shifting Fulbaria Bus Terminal to Keraniganj, relocating the Kawran Bazar kitchen market to Gabtoli and introducing Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) at expressway and flyover toll plazas.

A temporary bus terminal will be constructed on 15 acres of land at the Jhilmil project within four months until a permanent terminal is developed in Keraniganj. The rear portion of Gabtoli Bus Terminal will also be expanded to increase capacity and improve vehicle management.

The Prime Minister also directed the relocation of Kawran Bazar’s kitchen market to Gabtoli to reduce traffic pressure in the busy commercial area.

Authorities have been asked to introduce ETC systems at toll plazas to speed up toll collection and reduce congestion. The relevant agencies were directed to complete the work within four months.

For the Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover, BUET will review its existing report and submit recommendations within 15 days in coordination with the city corporation and traffic police.

The government will also examine the feasibility of developing parking facilities at Osmani Memorial Auditorium and other alternative locations around the Secretariat.

A separate policy will be formulated to regulate auto-rickshaws in Dhaka, while action will be taken against unauthorised double-decker sleeper buses.

The Prime Minister stressed stronger coordination among government agencies and timely implementation of the measures.
