Newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Khondkar Misbah ul Azim was formally adorned with the rank badge of Vice Admiral at a ceremony held this morning at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Armed Forces Division at Dhaka Cantonment.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and outgoing Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan jointly conferred the rank badge on the new naval chief. The Prime Minister congratulated Vice Admiral Misbah ul Azim on his appointment and wished him success in leading the Bangladesh Navy.
Expressing his gratitude, Vice Admiral Misbah ul Azim thanked the Prime Minister on behalf of the Bangladesh Navy.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Shamsul, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, Quartermaster General of the Bangladesh Army Lt Gen Md Shahinur Rahman, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Lt Gen Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, Prime Minister’s Military Secretary Maj Gen Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, among other senior officials.
Vice Admiral Misbah ul Azim has been appointed Chief of the Bangladesh Navy for a three-year term, effective from July 23, 2026, to July 22, 2029.
He joined the Bangladesh Navy on January 1, 1987, and was commissioned into the Executive Branch in 1989. He completed his initial naval training with distinction in the Royal Malaysian Navy and later pursued higher education and advanced military training both at home and abroad. He also earned a PhD in Maritime Governance.
During a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades, he held several key command, staff and training appointments, including Commander Chattogram Naval Area, Commander Dhaka Naval Area, Commander Submarines, and Commandant of the Bangladesh Naval Academy.
He also served as Director of Naval Operations and Director of Naval Plans at Naval Headquarters and commanded a number of warships and naval bases.
Vice Admiral Misbah ul Azim has served in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Lebanon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Before assuming his new responsibilities, he served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Oman, where he played an important role in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting the welfare of Bangladeshi expatriates.
In recognition of his distinguished service, he has been awarded the Nou Bahini Padak (NBP), Nou Pardarshita Padak (NPP), the National Integrity Award, along with several other honours.
