Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has extended greetings and best wishes to leaders, activists, supporters, well-wishers and the people of the country on the occasion of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) 48th founding anniversary.
In a message, he described the establishment of BNP as a landmark event in the history of restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
Recalling the party’s founding by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman on August 31, 1978, Tarique Rahman said Zia restored democracy and the political rights of previously banned parties, paving the way for pluralistic democracy in the country.
Paying tribute to Ziaur Rahman, the Prime Minister described him as the Great Proclaimer of Independence, a successful statesman and the architect of modern Bangladesh. He also recalled former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, saying her leadership brought the party closer to people across the country.
Tarique Rahman said BNP leaders and activists had made sacrifices whenever the country’s independence, sovereignty and democracy came under threat. He added that the party had continued to play a role in protecting democratic values and the country’s national interests.
He said the people had entrusted BNP with the responsibility of running the state through free and fair elections, and the government was working to repay that trust by building an accountable, welfare-oriented and self-reliant Bangladesh.
“The people who believe in democracy are the source of all political power of BNP,” the Prime Minister said.
