Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said a strong and effective democratic system is essential for ensuring Bangladesh’s sustainable progress and development, reaffirming his government’s commitment to strengthening democracy and protecting citizens’ constitutional rights.
He made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Anda Filip at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh had restored democracy after a long struggle, during which many political leaders and activists became victims of enforced disappearances, killings and legal cases. He said the February 12 election helped restore the democratic process in the country.
Tarique Rahman said his government remains committed to strengthening democracy, ensuring public services and protecting the constitutional rights of every citizen. He also highlighted women’s empowerment as a key priority, including plans for free education for women up to the honours level and stipends for female students.
He said the proposed Family Card programme also aims to strengthen women’s financial independence and increase their role in family decision-making.
Anda Filip praised the Prime Minister’s regular participation in Jatiya Sangsad sessions, saying it reflected his commitment to parliamentary democracy. She also appreciated initiatives outlined in the BNP’s election manifesto, particularly in education and community-based development.
The IPU Secretary General expressed interest in expanding cooperation and experience-sharing with the Bangladesh Parliament and stressed the importance of civic awareness in making democracy more effective and sustainable.
State Ministers for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir and Shama Obaed Islam were also present at the meeting.
