Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government has already prepared a 10-year plan to develop Bangladesh’s power and energy sectors, with some parts currently under review.
Speaking during the question-answer session in the Jatiya Sangsad, he said the government would soon present its long-term plans for the power and energy sectors.
The Prime Minister said the plan aims to support Bangladesh’s goal of becoming a trillion-dollar economy by 2034.
On the issue of open-pit coal mining in Phulbari, he said the government would give priority to the interests of local people and environmental protection.
He said the Phulbari coal reserve could help meet the country’s energy needs and save foreign currency. However, the government would carefully review the impact of any mining project before making a final decision.
The Prime Minister assured that if open-pit mining moves forward, affected people would be properly resettled and measures would be taken to protect their livelihoods.
